Retail sales up 8.2% in August

Taiwan’s wholesale, retail and food services sales all rose in August compared with the same month in 2019. According to a report from the Ministry of Economic Affairs, wholesale trade sales in August increased by 0.1% to NT$880.4 billion, retail trade sales increased by 8.2% to NT$334 billion while sales of food and beverage services were NT$73.6 billion, an increase of 2.0% on an annual basis.

According to the report, the largest increases in the retail sector were seen in motor vehicles and motor cycle stores, where sales rose 33.5% year on year. Meanwhile, electronic shopping and mail order houses also posted robust growth of 16.4% while convenience stores sales rose by 15.6%. In the wholesale sector, there was also a large 10.8% increase in sales of household appliances and goods, although there was a decline of 17% in sales of textiles and clothing.
