Taiwan ranked as the top "full democracy" in Asia, jumping three places from last year in the 2021 Democracy Index.

According to the report released by the Economist Intelligence Unit, Taiwan has also climbed to 8th place globally, from 11th in the 2020 report – with a score of 8.99 out of 10.

The index is based on the categories of electoral process and pluralism, civil liberties, the functioning of government, political participation, and political culture.

It assesses the state of democracy in 167 countries and regions worldwide.

Taiwan is the only country in Asia listed in the top 10 worldwide.

Norway topped the global rankings with a score of 9.75, followed by New Zealand, Finland, Sweden and Iceland to round out the top five.

North Korea, Myanmar and Afghanistan are at the bottom of the rankings.
