Transport Minister Wang Kwo-tsai is defending the government's decision to locate a high-speed rail extension station near Yilan County Hall.

Wang says the site has the support of Yilan residents... and is considered to be the best choice.

The statement comes amid criticism that the transport ministry ignored procedure when selecting the site.

The government contracted consulting firms in November of 2019 to evaluate possible locations for the station.

The transport minister says the government gathered opinions from both experts and Yilan residents before it finalised the site.

That location is about 350 metres south of the Yilan County Hall andwas seen as the best choice.

The minister says the route bypassed downtown Yilan, and construction will not interfere with the Taiwan Railways Administration's operations.

An environmental impact assessment and detailed designs will be completed between 2022 and 2024.

The government hopes construction on the extension line from Nangang Station to Yilan will be completed by 2036.
