The government may rent entire hotels to meet quarantine needs for the peak Lunar New Year travel period.

Speaking to lawmakers, Transport Minister Wang Kwo-tsai says currently there are a total of 26,000 quarantine hotel rooms, which could increase to 31,000 before the holidays.

He says it's estimated that 40,000 people, mostly Taiwanese nationals, will come home for family reunions.

Local news media reported last week that nearly all the hotel rooms in the first weeks of January have been booked.

Wang says local tourism officials can sign short-term leases with ordinary hotels and turn them into coronavirus-prevention facilities to meet demand.
