The Ministry of Labor is ready to allow more migrant workers into Taiwan this month.
Labor Minister Xu Ming-chun says as the manpower shortage is worsening, her ministry has presented a plan for more foreign workers to the health ministry for review.
Xu has asked that the health ministry reserve 1,700 beds at government quarantine centres for those workers.
Explaining why the restrictions over migrant workers are stricter compared with other foreign travellers, Xu says the Covid-19 situation in Vietnam, Indonesia, The Philippines and Thailand remains severe and Taiwan mainly relies on those four countries for migrant workers.
Xu also says that employers who have better epidemic preventive measures, such as larger dormitories for migrant workers, will be granted permission to bring in workers sooner.
