The Ministry of Education (MOE) has unveiled its English teaching guidelines for schools.
The guidelines include the goal of having 60% of schools, from elementary to senior high level, use only English to teach English language courses by 2024.
According to Education Minister Pan Wen-chung, his office is stepping up efforts to train Taiwanese English teachers and recruit foreign English teachers to achieve Taiwan's goal of becoming a bilingual country.
Pan says the government is planning to ask teachers in one-seventh of the island's schools to teach part of their courses besides English classes bilingually.
And Pan also says teachers in all schools will be asked to use only English to teach English classes by 2030.
The policy to make Taiwan bilingual by 2030 was initiated by Vice President William Lai in 2018 when he served as premier.
