Car sales in Taiwan for June 2021 plunged to a 12 year-low due to the pandemic but are higher than last year for the first six months of 2021.

According to transportation authority data, about 28,000 cars were sold in the local market in June, the lowest level since 2009 and down 32.5% from the same month a year earlier and also down 18.8% from a month earlier.

Market analysts said the tumble came after the government raised the alert for the pandemic in Taiwan to Level 3 nationwide in mid-May.

They say the raised alert level has discouraged people from leaving home unless it's necessary, which has led to a sharp drop in travelling and socializing, dampening interest in buying vehicles.

Despite the plunge in June sales, car sales for the first six months of this year were up 5.7% from a year earlier.
