Taiwan’s National Federation of Teachers Unions says elementary and secondary schools will start the new school year on 1 September.

According to the union, the slight delay is to allow time for the implementation of coronavirus prevention measures at schools islandwide.

Union Deputy Secretary-General Chang Chiung-fang says proper disinfection will be important during the two-day period, as some schools will be used as polling stations for the 28 August national referendums.

Chang says the extra time will give the schools time to thoroughly clean their campuses and make other preparations before the students return from their two-month summer break.

The summer vacation is due to begin on 3 July and the union says students in the K-12 system will have a full 60-day vacation. The new school year was originally slated to start on 30 August.

Meanwhile, the Taipei European School will start its summer vacation today and is currently scheduled to start its first semester on 23 August.
