Lawmakers have passed a draft amendment to increase the special budget supporting coronavirus economic relief measures from NT$420 billion to N840 billion.
In addition to doubling the budget cap, the amendments to the Special Act for Prevention, Relief and Revitalization Measures for Severe Pneumonia with Novel Pathogens also extends the act for one year. This means it will now expire on 30 June 2022.
The act was first introduced last year following the global spread of the pandemic and was initially capped at NT$210 billion, but has now received three additional increases, including the latest one.
The amended act is expected to take effect at a legislative session on Thursday after which the cabinet will make public specific budget proposals on how the money should be spent, which will then be reviewed by the Legislative Yuan.
