The EPA is planning to offer cup rentals on outlying islands to cut down on waste.

The Environmental Protection Administration says preparations are underway to offer reusable drink containers for rent on several outlying islands next year.

The system is already operating on Xiaoliuqiu and Penghu, where users can scan a QR code at drink shops to rent the cups, and return at another location, including convenience stores and tourist information centres.

EPA officials say they are also considering installing the system on Taiwan proper, at night markets and other high-traffic areas.

Officials say their main goal is to reduce the amount of waste produced, and encourage a circular economy.
