Taichung City’s Green Line, the city's first metro rail (MRT) route, has finally become operational after years of delay.

The free trial period started at 7am today and nearly 5,000 city residents took it during the first two hours.

Taichung Mayor Lu Shiow-yan also took a ride from Song-zhu Station to City Hall, saying that her government is mulling over whether the trial period should be extended.

One passenger said that, compared to Taipei’s MRT Wen-hu Line, which is also a
medium-capacity rail system, Taichung MRT's train cars are larger and more comfortable.

The new system starts from Bei-tun terminal and ends at the Taiwan High-speed Rail station in Wuri, totalling 18 stations.

Construction work began in 2009 and was halted for four months in 2015.
