Wholesale and retail sales rise in September

Compared with the same month in 2019, sales of wholesale trade in September 2020 increased 8.2% to NT$952.1 billion while retail sales in September 2020 increased 2.9% year-on-year to NT$320.6 billion. According to the monthly report released by the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA), wholesale sales of machinery and equipment rose 11.1% while sales of pharmaceutical, medical goods and cosmetics rose 15.8% from a year earlier. In the retail sector, electronic shopping and mail order houses experienced the highest rate of growth (11.9%), followed by department stores (10.6%), food beverages and tobacco (9.9%), convenience stores (8%) and supermarkets (7.5%). However, growth in the food services category was lacklustre, posting only a 0.3% rise from a year earlier.
