Judicial Yuan starts seminars for citizen judges
The Judicial Yuan has started seminars in preparation for a new jury system that involves ordinary citizens.
It comes after the Legislative Yuan passed the Citizen Judges Act in July to allow citizens to take part in judicial proceedings via a “joint trial, joint verdict” mechanism.
Judicial Yuan Secretary General Lin Hui-huang says for the mechanism to work, it is important that judges, prosecutors and lawyers understand this major change and prepare well for it.
Lin says the Yuan has planned a series of seminars and “seed teacher” workshops in the north, centre and south.
The new system will take effect on 1 January 2023.
