Taiwan’s Central Weather Bureau says the mercury in Taipei rose to 38.9 degrees at 13:15 on Monday, 29 June, marking the highest temperature ever recorded in the capital in the month of June since the city's weather station was established in 1896.

According to the weather bureau, the new record was due to a combination of a Pacific high pressure system, prevailing hot dry southwesterly winds, and the geographical features of the Taipei Basin.

The weather bureau says we can expect similar temperatures for much of this week in northern Taiwan.
