The Ministry of Economic Affairs announced that the government will continue to requisition eight million surgical face masks per day until the end of July, despite the coronavirus situation easing off here in Taiwan.

According to the ministry, the requisitioning effort has been extended for another month following a recent inter-ministerial meeting.

Reports are citing an official as saying that decision was made as the government is seeking to ensure that there is sufficient stockpile of face masks in case coronavirus infections flare up again.

The government has been requisitioning all medical face masks since 31 January, when it implemented a rationing programme limiting the public to three masks per week and later to nine per fortnight.

Daily face mask production capacity here in Taiwan currently stands at around 20 million.
