The Executive Yuan appointed Yang on Friday soon after the Central Election Commission officially announced the removal of Han from the mayoral post.

Yang, who had served as deputy mayor under the city’s former DPP Mayor Chen Chu, will stay in the post until a by-election for the city to choose a new mayor scheduled for 15 August.

The 64-year old Yang has been working for the Kaohsiung City Government since 1984. After Han took office as Kaohsiung mayor in December 2018, Yang was appointed by Han as the city government's chief secretary for eight months before being reassigned as a counsellor
