The Kuomintang (KMT) has announced plans to push for amendments to several laws aimed at extending the lifespan of the island's nuclear power plants.

The party cited a recent poll indicating that more than 70% of the public support the idea. The poll was conducted by a KMT affiliated think-tank, which found that nearly 74% of respondents support amendments that would extend the operational lifespan of nuclear power plants from 40 years to 60 years while nearly 21% of respondents oppose the idea.

KMT Chairman Eric Chu says he firmly believes that a majority of the public view the DPP's 'nuclear-free homeland' policy has adversely affecting Taiwan's energy development and the DPP's move to shutter nuclear power plants and replace them with green energy will result in electricity prices hikes, and Taipower incurring severe losses."

The KMT's amendments target the Electricity Act, the Nuclear Reactor Facilities Regulation Act, the Climate Change Response Act and the Basic Environment Act.

The Ministry of Economic Affairs has responded to the move - calling for dialogue between the opposition and ruling parties on the issue. The ministry also stressed there can be no compromise on nuclear safety.
