Government pledges steeper cuts to carbon emissions
The government says it plans to further reduce carbon emissions to reflect the island's commitment to net zero.
Speaking at the third meeting of the Presidential Office's climate change committee, President Lai Ching-te announced what he called the government's "more ambitious carbon reduction targets." According to Lai, his administration will work to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by between 26% and 30% by 2030 compared to 2005 levels. That's an increase from the original goal of between 23% and 25%.
Lai told the committee that the revised reductions mean Taiwan's carbon emissions would need to drop to between 198.98 and 188.23 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent by 2030 and that carbon emissions should also be reduced between 30% and 34% by 2032 and by between 36% and 40% by 2035.
The president went on to say the new reduced carbon emissions targets have been decided on following meticulous reviews and he believes it's crucial for the people of Taiwan to take more active steps in fulfilling their responsibilities to the international community.
