Ex general indicted for plot to overthrow government
The High Prosecutors' Office has indicted a former general and five other people for allegedly accepting funds from Beijing to assist in overthrowing the government here in Taiwan.
According to the prosecutors' office, retired Army Major General Kao An-kuo established a pro-unification group called the "Republic of China Taiwan Military Government" that planned to act as armed collaborators in the event of an invasion by China.
Prosecutors say the group received funding of around NT$9 million from China, which they planned to use to establish armed units and operational bases in Taiwan to facilitate the government's overthrow.
Kao, his girlfriend Liu, two retired soldiers and two other men have all been charged with violating Articles 2 and 7 of Taiwan's National Security Act. All six have been detained.
The Ministry of Justice Investigation Bureau first received a report about Kao's activities in 2020. It set up a joint taskforce comprising of personnel from the High Prosecutors' Office, the Taipei District Prosecutors' Office, the Criminal Investigation Bureau and the Ministry of National Defense was formed to investigate the group.
Raids were carried out in 26 locations in November of last year and 47 people were questioned.
