President congratulates Trump on inauguration
President Lai Ching-te used social media to extend his congratulations to Donald Trump upon his inauguration as the 47th President of the United States. In a social media post Lai also said Taiwan was looking forward to working with Trump's administration. Lai was one of several world leaders who used social media to congratulate the new president.
Meanwhile in Washington DC, members of a cross-party delegation of lawmakers led by Legislative Speaker Han Kuo-yu watched a livestream of the inauguration at the Capital One Arena. Trump's inauguration ceremony was moved to inside the Capitol Rotunda instead of on the steps of the Capitol due to sub-zero temperatures.
DPP lawmaker Wang Ting-yu said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Taiwan's representative office to the US secured four tickets to watch the inauguration livestream in a VIP room in the arena. Those four tickets were given to Wang, Han, KMT lawmaker Ko Zhi-en and Taiwan People's Party lawmaker Chen Zhao-zi. The other four lawmakers in the delegation watched the livestream inside the arena's public area.
