The cabinet has approved an NT$80.77 billion plan to reduce water leakage in Taiwan's distribution system over the next eight years.

The initiative aims to lower the current leakage rate from 12% to under 10% by 2032, aligning with international standards. The plan includes identifying high-leak areas, upgrading pipes, and improving maintenance. Upon completion, it is expected to save 59 million cubic meters of water annually, equal to the volume of Yunlin's Hushan Reservoir.

Premier Cho Jung-tai emphasized the need to address Taiwan's low water prices, which average NT$9.24 per cubic meter, among the world's cheapest. Prices have remained unchanged for over twenty years, contributing to losses of NT$4.2 billion for Taiwan Water Corporation in 2023.

The Ministry of Economic Affairs has been tasked with reviewing water pricing to ensure sustainability.
