LY passes law to boost pensions of police and firefighters
08 January, 2025
The Legislative Yuan has passed a law to boost retirement pensions for police, firefighters, coast guard, and air service personnel.
The new system ties monthly pensions to years of service, with replacement rates starting at 43.25% for 15 years and rising to a maximum of 80% after 36 years.
The amendment, backed by the KMT and TPP, passed by a narrow 60 to 49 votes. Supporters argue it reflects the stressful and dangerous nature of these jobs, while the ruling DPP raised concerns about fairness for other civil servants.
The Retired Police Officers Association welcomed the change as "delayed justice," calling it a fair recognition of their service. However, the DPP plans to request a constitutional review of the amendment.
