Delivery drivers protest against Uber Eats acquiring Foodpanda
Members of the National Delivery Industrial Union have been protesting against Uber Eats' plans to acquire Foodpanda.
More than 200 delivery partners gathered outside the office's of the Fair Trade Commission to voice their opposition to the move, while union officials filed a petition with the commission opposing the takeover.
The union is calling for a thorough assessment of the deal and stressing that the delivery industry will not recognize any decision unless it can be certain the process had been conducted effectively. The union is also urging the commission to prevent a monopoly from acquisition - noting that if Uber Eats acquires Foodpanda, the delivery platform will have a market share of around 80-90%, giving it significant sway over the market.
The union cited data compiled by local media stating that if the acquisition is allowed to proceed, Uber Eats will be in charge of managing Taiwan's 160,000 delivery drivers and over 100,000 partnering sellers.
Uber Eats Taiwan says the acquisition will benefit consumers, retail partners and delivery drivers and the company will also hold discussions with delivery service unions.
