Baseball team to get victory parade
Taiwan's national baseball team returned home from Tokyo last night after winning the WBSC Premier 12 Championship title.
They were met at Taoyuan International Airport by Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim, and by a huge crowd of fans. President Lai Ching-te ordered four F-16 fighter jets to escort the plane carrying the baseball team home as it approached the airport to celebrate the win. The plane also received a water salute shortly after it arrived on the tarmac.
Taiwan is celebrating a historic win in the Premier 12 championship with a victory parade this afternoon. The event honouring the national baseball team begins at 15:20, with the parade starting out on Ketagalan Boulevard, with performances scheduled for key areas along the route, and special cheering zones set up for the public to enjoy. The parade ends at the Presidential Office building, with the team set to pass through a ceremonial arch formed by the military honour guard.
Officials say President Lai Ching-te and Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim will greet the players and host a ceremony honouring their achievement. The event will also be livestreamed on multiple platforms and news networks.
Two businesses in Taiwan gave their employees the day off today to celebrate the national baseball team's victory in the WBSC Premier12 tournament. Following the win, cybersecurity service provider Trend Micro said its Taiwan-based employees would be given a paid holiday on Monday to commemorate the historic event. A Trend Micro employee said that when she received an email about the day off from the company late last night, she initially thought it was a phishing scam. She said she had never taken a day off for such a cause before. DailyView, a big data analysis company, also announced on Sunday that its employees would be given a paid holiday to mark Taiwan's win.
Meanwhile, major convenience store chains are offering special deals on snacks and drinks for a limited time to celebrate Taiwan's big win. 7-Eleven's promotion includes discounts on some Japanese snacks like Inari sushi, that's sushi rice wrapped in bean curd, and deals on selected coffees. Family Mart and Hi-Life have buy-one-get-one-free deals on selected coffees, and other drinks as well. OK Mart also has 40% off selected Japanese snacks, and discounts on some teas. For beer lovers, supermarket chain Carrefour has special promotions on some drinks, including Taiwan Beer.
