President Lai Ching-te says he believes an economic partnership agreement between Taiwan and the European Union will set a strong basis for bilateral cooperation in semiconductors and artificial intelligence.

Lai told attendees at the EU Investment Forum in Taipei that the two sides need to establish a "strong democratic umbrella" to counter growing authoritarianism and to ensure secure supply chains for global democracies.

He said he believed the signing of a partnership agreement will provide a solid framework to deepen cooperation in advanced technologies and make both economies more resilient. Lai added he believes his government will take an innovative approach toward signing an economic partnership agreement with the EU.

But in a video message to the event, the deputy head of the European Commission's directorate-general for trade didn't raise the likelihood of the EU and Taiwan signing an economic partnership agreement.
