MOE to adjust bilingual education policy
Ministry of Education (MOE) Minister Cheng Ying-Yao (鄭英耀) says there'll be some adjustments to the bilingual policy. Cheng says for junior high and elementary schools, the focus will be on the application of language skills in daily life via activities like community tours and travels.
The bilingual policy, implemented in 2018, has given rise to many problems over time and drawn opposition from many parents and teachers.
According to media reports, President Lai Ching-te has called for a policy adjustment, saying English should be used for teaching English classes and not for other subjects.
At the high school level, Cheng says many high schools currently have overseas sister schools or bilingual experimental classes, and his ministry will respect individual schools' ways of promoting bilingual education.
