The Ministry of the Environment (MOENV) is hoping to deepen cooperation with NASA, with the long-term goal of launching its very own satellite to monitor air quality.

Minister of Environment Peng Chi-ming (彭啟明) spoke at yesterday's "7-SEAS and KPEx Workshop", which saw representatives from multiple Asian countries attending.

Peng said that Taiwan, with such a satellite, could play a significant role in Asia -- and even globally -- offering detailed insights on air pollution, both cross-border and local.

The MOENV also presented findings from its joint air-quality monitoring project with NASA and other Asian countries. Results showed that Taiwan has similar air-quality levels to that of South Korea and Japan.

Experts noted that foreign pollutants contribute significantly to Taiwan's pollution pointing out that NASA's data showed substantial ozone increases and worsening pollution at higher altitudes.
