The Central Weather Administration says Typhoon Kong-rey could make landfall by Thursday but there are still many variables affecting the storm's path.
As of 02:00 today, Kong-rey was located about 900 kilometres east-southeast of Cape Eluanbi, Taiwan's southernmost tip. It's moving in a west-northwesterly direction at speeds of 15 kilometres per hour.
CWA indicates the typhoon is packing maximum sustained winds of 119 kph, with gusts of up to 155 kph.
Forecasters say Kong-rey continues to strengthen and may make landfall in Taitung late Thursday or early Friday, with the eye of the storm then moving into the Taiwan Strait through central Taiwan on Friday morning.
But the CWA says there are still variables in its forecast beyond Thursday, and Kong-rey may not make landfall at all, turning north off the coast of northeastern Taiwan, or moving through the Bashi Channel between Taiwan and the Philippines.
In either case, Taiwan will be most affected by Kong-rey on Thursday and Friday, as heavy rainfall or torrential rain is expected in the northern, eastern and southern parts of the island and mountainous areas in central Taiwan.
