MOENV to update carbon reduction targets
Ministry of Environment minister Peng Chi-ming says the government is aiming to update its carbon reduction targets from the period leading up to 2032 to reflect more ambitious net zero goals.
According to Peng, the government is currently evaluating the existing carbon reduction plans and their implementation and hopes to finalize a "flagship program," including new goals in the years leading up to 2032 and beyond soon.
The comments by the environment minister came after the National Climate Change Committee held its second closed-door meeting at the Presidential Office.
The government has said its current goal is to reduce emissions by 2030 by between 23% and 25% compared with 2005. The environment minister says although Taiwan is on the right track, the new goals will "make the figures look better," provided the "flagship program" was well implemented. However, Peng failed to provide any details or information as to what the "flagship program" will entail or how much it will cost.
