MOEA minister clarifies remarks about overseas power plants
Ministry of Economic Affairs Minister Kuo Jyh-huei (郭智輝) has apologized for saying the government is considering building green power plants in the Philippines and sending the electricity back to Taiwan to meet a desperate need for clean energy here.
Kuo characterised his remarks as "inaccurate" and suggested he had been careless in making them. The economics minister said his office would produce a report within six months on the feasibility of setting up green power plants overseas.
The apology and additional statements came after Kuo was widely panned for his idea. After he raised the idea on Monday, Kuo on Tuesday said the Ministry of Economic Affairs could help companies transfer the electricity generated in the Philippines back to Taiwan through an undersea cable or ship it to Taiwan by cargo vessels.
He didn't give any additional details around his plan but he continues to defend the idea - saying it originated among friendly countries in the region on the basis that they supply green power to each other.
