The Ministry of Health and Welfare has approved applications for subsidies from several hospitals to set up three types of artificial intelligence centres that promote the adoption of AI in health care institutions.

The ministry is set to grant subsidies to 16 medical institutions to establish three types of AI centres - those being responsible AI implementation centres, clinical AI verification centres, and AI impact research centres.

Health Minister Chiu Tai-yuan says the move will help solve issues including medical manpower shortages, the optimizing of long-term medical care policies, and sustaining the national health insurance system.

Chiu also says he firmly believes that AI medical applications can help achieve the government's goal of net-zero emissions and maintain the international competitiveness of Taiwan's medical sector.

The health ministry first announced the subsidy plan in July. Ministry officials say applications from 30 medical institutions were received by 1 August and applications from 16 hospitals, including National Taiwan University Hospital and Taipei Veterans General Hospital, were approved.
