The Ministry of Environment (MOENV) says it plans to station personnel in the European Union from early next year to monitor the bloc's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism.

The statement comes after the EU confirmed that Taiwan's carbon fees will be able to reduce CBAM tariffs imposed on non-EU exporters.

According to the MOENV, confirmation of that came earlier this week when a delegation visited EU climate-change-related institutions to discuss climate change, carbon emission trading, air quality and chemicals management and circular economy.

That delegation is being led by MOENV Minister Peng Chi-ming and includes members of the Climate Change Administration.

The EU will begin collecting Taiwan's carbon fees in 2026. However, the MOENV says details regarding how the carbon price paid in a third country will be credited to lower CBAM certificate obligations will not be released until mid-2025. Officials say industry insiders, environmental groups, and experts from Taiwan will visit the EU next year to help related stakeholders learn more about the bloc's carbon pricing policy.
