New Taipei City-based electronics manufacturer, Gold Apollo is denying claims by some international media outlets that it manufactured the pagers that exploded and killed Hezbollah members in Lebanon earlier this week.

Company chairman Hsu Qing-guang says the pagers were manufactured by a firm that operates under the name BAC, which licensed Gold Apollo's brand. Hsu adds that a foreign company became Gold Apollo's agency to distribute its products in certain areas three years ago. Less than two years ago that same company started to manufacture the pagers themselves while continuing to use Gold Apollo's brand.

The Gold Apollo chairman says he was told by the company that it wished to self-manufacture the pagers because it had its own engineers.

Gold Apollo says BAC Consulting is based in Budapest, Hungary. The Ministry of Economic Affairs says there are no records of Gold Apollo directly exporting its products to Lebanon in recent years, and the pagers it makes in Taiwan are only capable of receiving signals and use double A batteries, which are unlikely to cause fatal explosions.
