23 indicted for spying
19 September, 2024
The Tainan District Prosecutors' Office has indicted 23 people on charges of spying for China. The 23 include eight serving personnel from the Air Force, the Army, the Navy and the Coast Guard Administration.
According to the prosecutors' office, the espionage ring was created by two brothers in 2021 and targeted serving personnel who were known to be having financial problems.
Reports say the brothers received some NT$5 million over a two-and-half-year period from China to gather sensitive information. However, the Ministry of National Defense has said the active service personnel were not high-ranking officers and had little access to restricted information.
