DPP urges support for proposal on UN resolution 2758
DPP lawmakers are urging support for a legislative proposal that would reject Beijing's interpretation of United Nations Resolution 2758, which China claims justifies its sovereignty over Taiwan.
DPP lawmaker Chiu Yi-ying says the proposed motion aims to reject China's "misinterpretation" of the resolution, because the U-N statement does not mention Taiwan, address its political status, or establish China's sovereignty over the island.
Chiu added that the UN resolution should not keep Taiwan from playing a role in the international community.
Meanwhile, DPP Legislator Puma Shen says it is critical for Taiwan to devise a strategy to deal with how Resolution 2758 is being interpreted, as is being twisted by Beijing as part of its efforts to expand its jurisdiction.
The DPP initiative requires backing by more than half of all attending lawmakers. Neither the KMT nor the Taiwan People's Party has said whether or not they will back the proposal.
