EU and US issue statement supporting Taiwan
The United States and the European Union have issued a joint statement supporting Taiwan's international participation and urging China to show restraint in the Taiwan Strait.
The statement followed high-level talks on China and the Indo-Pacific. The talks were co-chaired by US Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell and European External Action Service Secretary General Stefano Sannino.
The US and the EU representatives emphasized the need for peace in the Taiwan Strait, rejected unilateral changes to the status quo, particularly through force and stressed the importance of maintaining open communication. They also pledged to counter China's transnational repression.
The statement omitted the "One China" policy, which was a departure from previous statements - as it had appeared in every statement since the Indo-Pacific consultations were launched in 2021, apart from the one just issued and another in April 2022.
The next US-EU dialogue is set for Washington next year.
