Taiwan now has more supermarkets per capita than Japan.

The Ministry of Economic Affairs reports Taiwan has one supermarket for every 10,000 people, much denser than Japan’s one per 27,000. In terms of land area, Taiwan also leads with a supermarket every 16 square kilometers.

Both Taiwan and Japan saw food products as the highest-selling items in supermarkets in 2022, accounting for 69% and 89% of total sales respectively.

However, Taiwanese supermarkets offered a more diverse range of products compared to their Japanese counterparts. In particular, household appliances and personal care products, including pharmaceuticals and cosmetics.

This year, supermarket revenue in Taiwan is expected to hit a record high of over NT$250 billion, marking 22 years of consecutive growth. The growth is driven by large store expansions, diverse products, and promotional activities.
