The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) has outlined part of its plans to promote Taiwan's inclusion in the United Nations this year.

Deputy Foreign Minister Tien Chung-kwang says the government intends to help the international community better understand United Nations Resolution 2758, so that Beijing can no longer misuse it to exclude Taiwan from the UN system.

Resolution 2758 was adopted by the UN in 1971 to address the issue of China's representation at the international body and resulted in Taiwan losing its seat at the UN to the People's Republic of China.

Tien points out that Resolution 2758 does not "authorize the PRC to represent Taiwan in the UN system, nor does it mention that Taiwan is part of the PRC".

The official says Nauru cited the resolution when it broke diplomatic ties with Taiwan earlier this year. He says if Taiwan does not clarify UN member states' understanding of the resolution soon, "the cross-strait status quo that neither Taiwan nor the PRC is subordinate to the other will be overturned by the PRC."

He says the government is thus calling on the UN to actively stop China from undermining Taiwan's participation in international organizations by distorting the meaning of the resolution.

The 79th UN General Assembly is to open on Tuesday next week at its headquarters in New York.
