Premier Cho Jong-tai has confirmed that Cabinet spokesman Chen Shih-kai (陳世凱) will become the new Minister of Transportation and Communications (MOTC).

The announcement comes after Li Men-yen resigned from the post last week following revelations of an extramarital affair.

Chen served as a spokesperson during President Lai Ching-te's presidential campaign and for the cabinet after Lai took office in May. He's now expected to take up the minister of transportation's top job on 2 September.

Speaking during a cabinet press briefing, the premier expressed confidence in Chen's ability to lead the ministry despite his lack of a proven track record in the field. However, the premier stressed that Chen's years of service at the Taichung City Council exposed him to local transportation affairs. The premier also highlighted Chen's academic background in politics and understanding of business management, expressing hopes that Chen will effectively lead the MOTC.

As Premier Cho Jong-tai mentioned that the plans for Taiwan High-speed Rail's to extend to Yilan and Pingtung is nearly complete, Chen says he'll see to implement them as soon as possible.

Meanwhile Julia Hsieh (謝子涵), the current deputy spokesperson, will take over as spokesperson until a permanent replacement is named.

Chen Shi-kai has promised to implement President Lai's "balanced Taiwan" policy. He says that means giving the people in the eastern part of Taiwan a safe way home. Chen also acknowledges that the MOTC oversees a vast range of responsibilities, including land, sea, air, and various business entities like Taiwan Railways, Taoyuan International Airport, and Chung-hwa Post. He emphasised that in his new role, he will respect professional expertise, learn diligently and swiftly, and manage related affairs with dedication.
