The National Health Insurance Administration (NHIA) says it will cover 46 additional types of surgery performed by the Da Vinci robotic surgical system.

Administration head Shi Chong-liang says the expansion will be implemented in September at the earliest.

The surgeries to be covered by the National Health Insurance programme include a range of abdominal surgeries including gastrectomies and gastric bypass surgeries. Officials say the move is expected to benefit over 8,400 people annually.

Surgeries performed by the Da Vinci system are generally minimally invasive, resulting in a shorter hospitalization time.

The NHIA has covered 17 types of the surgeries performed by the system since March of last year. There are currently 70 Da Vinci robotic surgical systems being used around Taiwan.
