The Energy Administration says demand for electricity is estimated to grow by an average of 2.5% annually through 2028 due to the requirements of artificial intelligence technology.

The prediction is included in the Ministry of Economic Affairs' 2023 National Electricity Supply and Demand Report, which was released on Monday.

According to the Energy Administration, demand for electricity is expected to rise by between 12 and 13% in 2030 compared to that of 2024. The report says based on the assumption that AI applications will steadily expand, the average annual growth through 2033 is estimated to be 2.8%.

Energy Administration Director-General You Zhen-wei says in order to meet the rise in demand, the government will have to complete construction of new renewable energy and natural gas-fired generators. You also says the national grid will have to be upgraded and additional energy storage systems will have to put into place to support renewable energy generation.
