Government condemns shooting at Trump rally
President Lai Ching-te is condemning the shooting at a campaign rally for Donald Trump in the run-up to the 2024 US election.
Lai used social media to say his “thoughts and prayers are with the former US President” and to send his wishes for a “swift recovery.” Lai added that “political violence of any form is never acceptable in our democracies” and also he offered his “sincere condolences to the victims affected by the attack.”
Presidential Office spokeswoman Karen Kuo has also issued a statement, saying Lai has asked Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung to relay Taiwan's concern to American Institute in Taiwan Director Raymond Greene. Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim also shared her sympathies - saying she was “shocked by the shooting,” that “political violence is unacceptable” and that she stands “with those working to fortify democracies free of threats and violence.”
Meanwhile the Ministry of Foreign Affairs also took to social media to say “Our thoughts are with former US President Trump and all those affected by today's events” while adding “political violence has no place in democracy” and “Taiwan stands in solidarity with all those around the world working to uphold democratic values.”
