No progress in LY discussions over nuclear power
Discussions over revisions to extend the service life of nuclear power plants are at a standstill after lawmakers failed to reach any consensus during a legislative committee meeting.
The lack of consensus means the matter will now have to be sent to the legislative floor for final review. Lawmakers had been considering amendments to the Nuclear Reactor Facilities Regulation Act proposed by the KMT. The amendments seek to allow nuclear power plants to continue operating without going through the mandated license renewal process.
Nuclear Safety Commission Chairman Chen Dong-yang has warned about the danger of bypassing the license renewal process.
Chen says no one on the commission will sign off on allowing the extension of a nuclear power plant without a proper and full-scale security check and evaluation.
DPP lawmakers are accusing the KMT of seeking to rush through the amendments without taking into consideration the concerns being voiced by the head of the Nuclear Safety Commission.
