Taiwan Power Company says scorching hot weather sent electricity usage soaring to a record high of 41.18 million kilowatts on Tuesday.

The peak load was recorded at 13:52 and surpassed the previous record of 40.74 million kilowatts set on 22 July 2022.

Tuesday's usage was close to Taipower's estimated peak of 41.19 million kilowatts for this year.

Taipower says Tuesday's maximum power supply capability was 47.33 million kilowatts, with an operating reserve of 16.86%, indicating there was “adequate power supply.” The state-run utility said the record high power demand was down to muggy conditions caused by the high humidity before rainfall.

The Central Weather Administration recorded a high of 38.4 degrees in Yunlin County's Dou-Nan Township yesterday. The mercury in other parts of the centre and south, as well as Shezi Island in Taipei surpassed 37 degrees.
