President Lai Ching-te has outlined plans to establish three special committees - that he says will enhance Taiwan's defence, promote healthcare and tackle climate change.

The National Climate Change Response Committee, the Whole-of-Society Defence Resilience Committee and the Healthy Taiwan Promotion Committee will be established under the Presidential Office and be presided over by Lai.

According to the plans, the committees will include representatives from the government, industry and academia and they will meet every three months.

Lai says the committees would be tasked with formulating strategies for national development, enhancing communication with the public and accelerating policy implementation, while also working to "deepen cooperation with the international community."

Speaking to reporters, Lai said the committee on healthcare will work to expedite the implementation of his policy proposals made during his presidential campaign and seek international cooperation in the post-pandemic era.

Lai said the committee on climate change will be tasked with strategizing policies to enhance the island's resilience to potential extreme weather events and help to facilitate the policy goal of reaching net-zero emissions by 2050.

However, he failed to say what the defence-related committee would seek to achieve - and the Presidential Office has yet to say when the three committees will be formally established.
