New Health Minister Chiu Tai-yuan says there are no plans to increase the National Health Insurance premiums in the next one to two years. Chiu says although the insurance system is under heavy financial burdens, raising premiums would remain as the last resort. This year's total health insurance budget amounts to NT$875.5 billion, reaching the growth limit for the first time in nearly eight years.

Despite this, the medical community still faces challenges such as difficulties in hospital management, heavy workload of healthcare workers, and the slow inclusion of new drugs in the system, which means patients often have to pay large sums out of pocket for the latest treatments.

Experts have estimated that there could be a financial shortfall in the national health system as early as 2026.

Chiu says it's now time for a thorough review of the system and to find available health insurance funding.
