The Ministry of Economic Affairs has allowed the construction of three solid recovered fuel (SRF) power plants to push ahead.

The move reverses a decision by the Taoyuan city government to halt the construction of these plants by Cleanaway, Taiwan Cube Energy and Li Jiang Development because their applications were considered problematic.

Even though Cleanaway submitted an appeal, the MOEA overturned the decision by the Taoyuan City Government, allowing the projects to proceed.

Taoyuan Mayor Chang San-cheng said the decision was regrettable, but committed to closely monitoring the construction of the plants to protect the health of city residents.

The controversy began in late 2020 with the MOEA's initial support for the projects, but recommendation letters were rescinded in November 2023, leading to the city's permit cancellations in March 2024.

The MOEA's latest decision has faced local criticism and accusations of political motivations, given the area's existing pollution concerns from the Tatan Power Plant.

SRF is a fuel made from commercial waste, offering potential environmental benefits over coal but also raising concerns about pollution and recycling disincentives.
