Control Yuan President Chen Chu says she would support plans to scrap the government watchdog, but that any moves to abolish it must be made through a constitutional amendment.

This comes as lawmakers from the DPP, the KMT, and the Taiwan People's Party have proposed abolishing the Control Yuan in recent weeks.

Chen said she would respect a decision to abolish the government watchdog as long as the process was carried out to the letter-of-the-law.

On Monday, the KMT had urged the DPP to vote to freeze the Control Yuan's budget and approve a constitutional amendment referendum to abolish the supervisory and auditory branch of the government.

The KMT says if lawmakers agree on a constitutional amendment, a referendum on the issue could be held either in tandem with 2016's local government elections or alongside the next presidential and legislative elections in 2028.
