NMD to establish defence innovation unit
Newly sworn-in Ministry of National Defense (MND) Minster Wellington Koo has announced plans to set up a military technology development unit.
Koo says the unit is expected to integrate research on the development of military and civilian defence technology, to boost the nation's asymmetrical warfare capabilities.
Koo says the new entity will operate similarly to that of the United States Department of Defense's Defense Innovation Unit.
It will look to find ways to counter the heavy weaponry of Chinese forces by using smaller and more mobile equipment. The unit will be listed under the MND's Department of Integrated Assessment. The defence minister says the proposed entity will also work as a platform to combine the resources and capabilities the National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology and other civilian-run defence technology companies by focusing on next generation UAVs and unmanned ships.
Koo isn't releasing any further details on the planned unit, including when it will be launched, how much money it will cost to establish and what its annual budget might be.
