President Lai Ching-te has announced plans to establish a new ministry of physical education and sports development. Lai says the government will allocate an annual budget of NT$20 billion to encourage the hosting of international sports events in Taiwan.

The president proposed the ministry during his inauguration speech on 20 May. Yesterday he spoke at the opening of the Taiwan Athletics Open to say the Ministry aims to promote sports for all, boost the sports industry and encourage the hosting of international events in Taiwan.

He says the initiative will allow Taiwanese athletes to improve their skills by having more opportunities to compete with top international athletes and enable local sports fans to watch world-class sports competitions without the need to travel abroad.

The two-day event at Taipei Stadium today and tomorrow has seen a rare gathering in Taiwan of top international athletes after the open was upgraded this year to a leg of the World Athletics Continental Tour.
